Custom maps
Instead of a randomly generated map, you can run a map made by someone else or built by you. The Custom Maps page stores your .map files so you can pick them when you wipe.
Upload a map
- Open Custom Maps in the RUST group of the sidebar.
- In the Upload a map box, press Choose a .map file or drop the file onto the box.
- Wait for the upload to finish. The file must be a
.mapfile of up to 100 MB. - The map appears under Your maps. Press Refresh if it does not show up right away.
Use the map on your server
Uploading a map does not change the server by itself. You apply it with a wipe:
- Open Wipes.
- In the Custom map field, pick your map from the ones you uploaded.
- Choose Run now or Schedule, keep Create a backup first ticked, and press Wipe now (or schedule it).
- When the server starts, check the console until you see Server startup complete.
A custom map has its own size and terrain, so the Map size and Map seed fields normally do not apply to it. To go back to a generated map later, run another wipe with Custom map empty and a size and seed of your choice.
tip
Large custom maps take longer to load. The first start with a new map can take several minutes, so be patient before restarting.
Where to get maps
- Map websites and community Discords share maps you can download as
.mapfiles. - You can build your own with a map editor. RustEdit is the most common one. Some RustEdit maps come with extra requirements, such as a plugin or an extension that must be installed on the server. Read the map author's instructions before you use one, and ask us if you are unsure.
Common problems
- The server does not start with the map. Maps made for a different Rust version can fail to load. Read the console for the error, and try the latest version of the map from its author.
- The file will not upload. Check that it ends in
.mapand is not larger than 100 MB. - Players see a different map than expected. Make sure the wipe finished and the server restarted after you selected the map.
- Plugins misbehave on the map. Some maps contain custom prefabs and monuments that certain plugins do not expect. Test with fewer plugins.
If you are stuck, ask FenixAI to read your console, or open a ticket.
